Grading Scale & GPA Calculator
Each student will receive a numeric grade based on the statewide grading scale. The numeric grade and category of the course will determine the quality points earned for each subject. College Prep/Tech Prep/Applied courses earn the base weight. Honors, dual credit, pre-IB, advanced placement, and IB courses have higher values. A grade of 50 or below for any high school course will result in earning zero quality points.
Students and parents need to choose courses carefully. Students who withdraw from a course after five days in a 90-day course of 10 days in a 180-day course will receive a grade of "WF" and zero quality points. The "WF," with its accompanying zero quality points, will be included in the student's grade point ratio (GPR). (This policy does not give students the option to drop a class prior to the stated timeframes above "at will". If a student is scheduled in a requested class, and the school has not made an error, the student may not change.)
There are also new rules regarding the retaking of courses. If a student earns a 50-59 in a course, the course may be retaken no later than the next academic year under Credit Recovery. A student who retakes a high school credit course from middle school must complete it before the beginning of the second year of high school or before the next sequential course (whichever comes first). A student in grades nine through twelve must retake a course by the end of the next school year or before the next sequential course (whichever comes first). For all grade levels, all courses will remain on the transcript. However, only the highest grade will be used in figuring the student’s GPA. (see pp. 8-9 of SC UGP)
